Streaks, Struggles, Wimbledon & World Cup

Winning streaks, continued struggles, and a wild last weekend of Wimbledon and World Cup action. There's been a sporting feast around the world for us to enjoy this week.

This is Data Road Trip - investigating the key data points and numbers that formed what we saw in the week that was in sports.

Danger back to his best?

33 disposals, 10 tackles, 3 goals and 151 Ranking Points for the Brownlow Medallist and Geelong Midfielder, who hasn't quite been himself this season. It wasn't enough though, as Adelaide kept their season alive with a win.

Carlton's blues continue...

St. Kilda kicked more points than goals for the 12th time this season, so Carlton should count themselves lucky the margin was 64 points - it should've been a lot more. Meanwhile, it was a good time to be called "Jack"...

How about those Lions!?

The Brisbane Lions now hold the AFL's longest winning streak after Collingwood's seven-game streak was snapped by West Coast and Port Adelaide's five-game streak was ended by Fremantle.

Tom Mitchell needs help

29 first half disposals for Tom Mitchell on Saturday against the Lions - but he'd "only" amass 14 in the second half as Brisbane kicked ten goals to three to storm home to a big win. He finished with 157 ranking points, 7 marks and 7 tackles in addition to his 43 disposals but it was to no avail as the Lions ran away with it in the second half.

Bulldogs 3rd quarter struggles

Only Essendon have won fewer third quarters so far this season, but the Dogs had lost seven straight 3rd terms with no side having a worse points differential (-197). Melbourne were the latest side to have their way, kicking 8 goals straight to blow the Bulldogs out.

Not so sunny, Gold Coast

Gold Coast's loss to Essendon on Saturday was their 11th straight – the second longest losing streak in club history.

Lachie Whitfield's night out

Lachie Whitfield was best on ground for Greater Western Sydney in a classic win over Richmond. He totalled 150 ranking points thanks to 35 disposals, 12 marks and 6 tackles as GWS held on to a nail-biting win over the Tigers on Saturday night.

West Coast's MCG win

Since the 2015 Grand Final loss to Hawthorn, the Eagles had only won two of eight games at the MCG, and those were both against lowly Carlton. They overcame their hoodoo, smashing Collingwood in the second half to streak home by 35 points.

#Buddy900

Buddy Franklin kicked his 900th career goal, which you might remember us talking about last week. He's 9th in VFL/AFL History and has plenty of time to keep climbing the list.

Now Let's take a quick look overseas:

Wimbledon

Since 2002, Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray are the only players to have won the men's singles title at Wimbledon.

At Wimbledon on Saturday, Angelique Kerber became the first German woman to claim the title at the All England Club since Steffi Graf in 1996.

World Cup talking points

At the World Cup, we witnessed the highest scoring Final since 1986. Luka Modric won the Golden Ball award, and he is the 6th straight Golden Ball winner not to have won the tournament.

* Newly crowned Champions France are unbeaten when Paul Pogba & N'Golo KantΓ© have started in midfield together: 15 wins, 4 draws.

* French Manager Didier Deschamps became the third man to win the World Cup as both player and manager after he won the trophy as a player in 1998.

* Kylian MbappΓ© joined PelΓ© as the second teenager to score in a World Cup Final and followed in Paul Pogba's footsteps as the second consecutive French player to win Best Young Player at the World Cup.

* Mario Mandžukić became the first player to score an own goal in a World Cup Final, before becoming the second player in World Cup History to score both a goal and an own goal in the same game.
