Hawthorn haven't beaten Melbourne since 2018 which was a 67-point win in the Semi-Final although they did play out a draw in 2021. They've generally been one-sided games with the average winning margin over 30 points.

Last week:

Hawthorn broke even with Essendon for the first half before the Bombers gradually gained the ascendancy. The Hawks cause wasn't helped by inaccurate kicking for goal but bad kicking is bad football. The Hawks looked good in patches with Ginnivan, Watson and Chol all new faces in the forward line. The final margin of 24 points slightly flatters the Hawks.

Melbourne smashed the Bulldogs by 45 points and were in no danger at all. They needed a statement game after the poor showing in Round 0 vs Sydney. Their experienced players stepped up - Petracca, Gawn, Viney and a super return from Clayton Oliver.

What we can expect tonight:

Slice it and dice it any way you like, but Melbourne should be winning this and winning well.
