EPL 2022/23 - Arsenal Season Outlook

A football in-joke that has been around for as long as many people can remember is that Arsenal finish fourth every season, but in 2022/23, that would very much be a win for them.

This tongue-in-cheek jib at the Gunners came about due to the constant fourth place finishes under former manager, Arsene Wenger.

Finishing fourth six times in nine seasons, Arsenal fans shunned this lack of success as failure, frustrated at the lack of silverware in that period of time.

However, after not finishing in the top four for the past six seasons, Arsenal fans are desperate to return back to the place where they once, reluctantly, called home.

It seems that a new era is being bestowed upon the Gunners, as Mikel Arteta is seemingly building something quite special

Let’s take a dive into Arsenal for the upcoming season and examine whether they can finally return to Champions League football.

Arsenal's 2022-23 Project

Since the departure of the aforementioned Wenger, the Gunners have only had two permanent managers, Unai Emery and Mikel Arteta

Under Emery, the project that he was building was something that Arsenal fans never seemed to fully get behind. They added the likes of Nicolas Pepe and Kieran Tierney, but nothing ever seemed to really click.

They struggled in the league, finishing fifth after having the top four almost wrapped up on a silver platter, before being embarrassed by Chelsea in the Europa League final.

Emery was dismissed halfway through the following year and this led to Arteta’s appointment. This immediately sparked something for Arsenal, as they finished the season with the FA Cup trophy.

Despite a turbulent 2020/21 season, Arsenal maintained an eighth place finish and things were looking up.

At the beginning of 2021/22, Arsenal performed some shrewd business, including the permanent signing of Martin Ødegaard, who will captain the Gunners this season, and things were looking up.

After losing their opening three games of the season, the Gunners went on a nice run that set them up in a position to return to the top four. However, after disappointing results to Tottenham and Newcastle late in the season, this dream was dashed.

What that season showed though is that there is something very exciting happening at Arsenal.

Now, with the signings of Gabriel Jesus, Fabio Veria and Zinchenko, they have look to have addressed weaknesses in their squad for a cut price. Arteta is clearly building something that will require full backing from the board and the fans, as well as a heap of patience.

Playing some brilliant football with young and exuberant players, this Arsenal side could quickly develop into many peoples second team in 2022/23, exuding a likeable and contagious presence.

With how competitive the top four race is destined to be this season, it will be very interesting to see where Arsenal sit in that bunch, but make no mistake, tit shouldn't be a surprise if the old Arsenal is back very soon.
