BBL|12 Finals: How Do the BBL Finals Work?

The Big Bash League's finals series commences on Friday, January 27 as five teams compete for the BBL|12 title.

An Eliminator, Qualifier, Knockout, Challenger and Final is the format of the BBL post-season, which takes place over the course of eight days.

Stats Insider has broken down how the BBL finals work to take all the confusion out of the Big Bash League's post-season.

How Does How Does the BBL|12 Finals System Work?

At the end of the regular BBL season, the bottom three finishing sides automatically fail to qualify for a finals placing, with the top five ranked sides facing off to decide the eventual winner.

Beginning with the Eliminator on Friday, January 27, the sides that finish fourth and fifth meet in a contest that will see the winner progress to the Knockout game and the loser eliminated.

The Qualifier is the next match up, which starts on Saturday, January 28. The victor of this game goes straight through to the BBL Final, while the defeated team gets another chance, playing the winner of the Knockout match.

The Knockout starts on Sunday, January 29 and will see the third-placed side meet with the winner of the Eliminator, with the loser of the Knockout bundled out and the winner progressing.

The loser of the Qualifier will then face the winner of the Knockout in the second last final of the series, the Challenger, which is scheduled to take place on Thursday, February 2.

The Challenger will then decide which club will join the winner of the Qualifier in the BBL Final on Saturday, February 4, with the victor moving on to the deciding match while the loser will be eliminated.
