Mega U.S Open Betting Card: Club 20 Goes Big At Torrey Pines

The 2021 U.S. Open is upon us as we arrive in southern California at the majestic South Course at Torrey Pines, a course that will absolutely embarrass the best golfers in the world for four glorious days of golfing carnage.

It is going to be amazing.

For this auspicious event where we mere mortals of golf get to watch the best in the world get absolutely chewed up by the toughest test imaginable, it was thought fitting to try and get to 50 bets this week with a combo of Outrights, exotics, and some (lots) of Round 1 3-ball multis.

As always pick your lane and stick to it. If you just have a lobster to play with, just find what bet/s suit you and play those ones.

If you want to play more, reduce your stake – be smart about it and enjoy the weekend because it is going to be four wonderful mornings of waking up to absolute mayhem on course.

The Course – Torrey Pines (South)

This is a hard enough course when the players play here in late Jan for the Farmers Insurance Open, but this week it is going to be insane.

The Poa greens will be lightning fast and difficult to hit even from the fairway, which the USGA will ensure is running out enough to cause the balls to find some rough.

And speaking of rough, if social media videos from players this week are a guide, it is going to be as thick a Dustin Johnson, which anyone who has watched him at a press conference will know is about as thick as it gets.

Oh and also, they have taken the Par 5 6th which is usually an easy birdie hole and made it a 515yd Par 4!

That’s right, pipe a driver straight for 320 yards and you STILL have a 6 iron in hand.

Combine these fast, difficult conditions tee to green with the tricky poa putting surface which deteriorates as the day goes by and it is easy to see why pundits and tipsters are not looking too far down the betting board this week.

Weather and Skill Set

Weather looks great but there will be breeze for the afternoon waves all four days and being on the coast that 12-15km/h could easily gust up near 20 on any given day.

We’ve gone for a bit of a mixed bag for this major, because unlike the PGA Champs, not everyone can win a US Open.

Length (whether that is with driver or long irons), experience, superb short game/double bogey avoidance and luck are all required here.

The Bets

Rory McIlroy @ 21.00

For me Rory is an auto-bet at 20-1 in a Major, particularly one where probably only 20-30 players in this field have a legitimate chance of winning. There is a strong argument to hold fire on Rory and watch him shoot a 75 opening round THEN bet him at 50-1, but if he is anywhere near the lead these odds will plummet and he is hitting his irons too well to not jump in at the 21’s.

Will watch carefully to see how he is hitting them though, if he does start poorly but it is due to one bad hole, we may go again after R1 at better odds.

Webb Simpson @ 51/10

Perusing the Stats Insider Tournament Predictions has caused us to look a lot closer at Webb Simpson. The focus on length (which he doesn’t have) has really pushed his odds out and the SI model pounced.

T12 at Augusta then a T30 at Kiawah island is good solid form, Webb has played sparingly this season so you know he will have got some reps in at Torrey, a venue he seldom plays on tour.

Simpson finished T8 at Winged Foot last year in what many expect to be similar conditions. He has a great U.S Open record and if he can find short grass off the tee his short game will elevate him into contention at what are pretty ridiculous odds.

Louis Oosthuizen @ 51/10

Best Poa putter in this field, one of the best US Open records, tee to green game solid as a rock – Oosty just looks like a really smart, safe bet at these odds. Gained 7 strokes on the field on these greens in late Jan at the Farmers, and is now hitting his irons pure. T8, T2, T18 last three weeks at difficult courses.

Adam Scott @ 81/14

Shouldn’t be this price so we are taking the big number and just riding for luck. Solid course form (T10, T2 in two starts at Farmers) and is one of the most experienced in this field in US Open conditions. Poa his preferred surface to putt on.

Yes, his driver has been bad but it seems on the mend and with a swing like Scotty’s it is never far away from being cleaned up.

Really deceptive MC at Kiawah for the PGA given he made triple on the first hole and only missed on the number. Really like Scotty this week.

Top Player Multi’s

  • Scott Top Aussie, Oosty Top SA @ 12.00

  • Scott Top Aussie, Oosty Top SA, Hatton Top UK @ 56.00

After having a little look at the Top Player markets by country, decided to combine Scotty and Oosty into a two-legger to be the top players from their countries.

Odds have annoyingly come down from 15’s to 12’s since yesterday but still betting the two legger, and also adding Tyrell Hatton as Top UK player into a 3-legger.

Round 1 3-Ball Multis

Last, but certainly not least, it’s the US Open and we are excited for some early sweatiness so Round 1 3-ball multi’s are the order of the evening!

  • Lowry/Stensen/F Molinari @ 1.91

  • Jones/Steele/C Smith @ 3.10

  • Finau/Ancer/Berger @ 2.37

  • Zalatoris/Scheffler/Spieth @ 3.00

  • Scott/Garcia/Watson @ 2.63

  • Keopka/Thomas/Morikawa @ 2.80

We’re taking each 3/4/5 leg multi plus the 6-legger which is paying 310-1.

That’s 42 bets just on these R1 multi’s so what we’re doing is just betting $1 bets. For the $42 spend its over 2k back if they all come in, but we just four (4) to hit and we’ve had a great night.

Who do you like at Torrey?

Do you like someone not mentioned above? Feel free to follow us on twitter at the Club 20 front bar and have a yarn to us about who you like this week and why – we have very little to do but drink and watch the view whilst talking bets, so come in a pull up a pew.

Also, be sure to check out the Stats Insider Tournament Predictions, Players Rankings and H2H Matchup Tool pages and if you are betting or tipping footy, be it AFL or NRL, check the Match Pages out as well.

There are heaps of great yarns on the site, so much data all there to help you, all free.

Look ill stop banging on about it but it’s pretty awesome so check it out.

Finally, golfing gods if you are listening, if you could just see it in you to give us a big 12 or a 13 from Bryson on a hole, any hole, that would be amazing.

Enjoy the US Open, let's go our R1 Multis!

Hedge

Cruelly denied sporting glory due to recurring shin splint complaints and an aversion to warm-up laps, Hedge now spends his days golfing, fishing the leaves out of the Club 20 pools and identifying value plays in PGA, AFL, AFLW and T20. All you really need to know about him is he's more than comfortable taking 3I off the tee on a Par 5, and more than capable of pulling driver off the deck second shot.
