What a disastrous day 9 it was for the NBA Betting Preview. Kevin Love was a late out for the Cavaliers, sinking their offense. A raucous fan fired up Damian Lillard, provoking a record-breaking 34 point second half that blew the total Over, and the Lakers late surge pushed them past Denver. Let's hope the luck turns on day 10.
Today we'll be focusing on a slew of underdogs vs heavy favourites. Toronto hosts Dallas, Golden State heads to the Big Apple to take on the Knicks, and the Pelicans try to keep things rolling against Brooklyn.
Dallas @ Toronto
The Mavericks will look to rebound from a tough loss to the Atlanta Hawks, where they blew a 25 point lead and lost late on. Kawhi Leonard meanwhile has taken to the Raptors with a glove fit, and they are already undefeated at 5-0.
Toronto has been clinical at home, and have already racked up wins at home against Cleveland, Boston, Charlotte and Minnesota. Dallas has been terrible on the road, embarrassed by Phoenix and Atlanta.
Key Stats and Trends: the Raptors offense should shred the Mavericks porous defense, with Toronto posting an outstanding 116.3 points per 100 possessions, 3rd in the NBA. Dallas is ranked 26th in defense, and they'll struggle to handle the Raptors' wings.
Expect Toronto to continue their strong home form, with Dallas their next victim.
Key Play: Toronto -11.5
Golden State @ New York
Steph Curry will bring his flamethrower offensive talents to Madison Square Garden, fresh off the back of a 51 point performance against Washington. Kevin Durant was also brilliant but was merely a sideshow next to Curry.
New York meanwhile has racked up a significant injury list, with Kristaps Porzingis, Courtney Lee, Kevin Knox, Emmanuel Mudiay and Lance Thomas all sidelined. It's going to be tough going for them against the Warriors' talent.
Key Stats and Trends: Curry's start to the season is the perfect way to begin a campaign for a 3rd MVP. He's averaging 34.6 points (55.0% shooting from the field, 52.4% from three), 4.8 rebounds, 6.8 assists and 1.0 steal. If he continues his scorching form, it's over.
The Warriors will destroy the Knicks on their own home floor, with little mercy. A show to be put on for the New York crowd.
Key Play: Golden State -12
Brooklyn @ New Orleans
New Orleans will be looking to continue their undefeated start to the season, as they host a Brooklyn squad currently .500 on the season with a 2-2 record. Anthony Davis has been unstoppable, and the Nets don't have someone who can slow him down.
Davis is averaging 30.3 points per game on 59.3% shooting, 13.0 rebounds, 5.3 assists, 2.0 steals and 3.3 blocks - a jaw-dropping stat line. He's been ably assisted by Nikola Mirotic, Jrue Holiday, Julius Randle and the rest of the Pelicans rotation and they look the same team who destroyed Portland last postseason.
Key Stats and Trends: the Pelicans offense has been otherworldly so far, posting 122.2 points per 100 possessions, easily 1st in the NBA. They're also 2nd in pace, and it'll be fascinating to see whether that can continue against the 28th ranked Nets.
If the Nets can't slow them down, this will be a slaughter. And I think that will be.
Key Play: New Orleans -9.5
Season Record: 9-12
