NRL Pro Punter Previews - Bulldogs v Roosters, Round 5 2024

Game #2 of Round 5 is the early game on Friday night from Accor Stadium.

Despite having a poor performance in round 1, the Bulldogs have played pretty good footy over the past three weeks.

Kikau is contributing far more in 2024 and Burton seems to be relishing having some more quality players around him. However, the loss of Addo-Carr and Preston will hurt, taking away two of their classiest players.

Preston is a particularly big loss which is compounded by suspension of Morrin. The Doggies do not have the forwards depth to plug such a hole and against a Roosters forward pack that is stacked with depth, the battle for the middle will be where this game is won for the Roosters in my view.

For the Roosters, their form line has been the complete opposite. They played great in Round 1 and 2, but since then have been patchy. The best they have looked is when Keary has been off the field and I think he is a real issue for this club. His diminutive size and history of head knocks seem to be blunting his playing style. He doesn’t dig in deep to the defensive line with carrying the ball and this is causing issues for his outside men.

But the Roosters forwards are also struggling, with only Terrell May and Victor Radley having a genuinely strong season. JWH, Crichton, Butcher and Tupouniua are all playing well below their 5 year averages and if Robinson doesn’t find a way to motivate these guys, then the Roosters will have another disappointing season.

But in their defense, the Roosters have had to play tough games… with two of their four matches against the grand finalists and the other two games against Manly and Souths, so they will relish playing a team that is not stacked with superstars.

I think the Roosters are ready to fire here and believe they will be ruthless against the Doggies.
