After demolishing the Dolphins in Round 1, it felt like the Cowboys has returned to their 2022 form. While there is no doubt this team can attack, some of their defence in 2024 has been poor and they seam to suffer from a lack of defensive mobility. Taumalolo, McLean and Neame are all big boys that struggle to move laterally. Teams have worked this out and are attacking the Cowboys up the middle to tire them out.
If the Cowboys do not maintain possession, they simply run out of gas and as the Sharks showed last week, this will lead to their defence leaking points.
As for the Panthers, they welcome back Cleary and are starting to look like the team that won the Grand Final last year. While they have only dropped two games, when you throw in their WCC loss to Wigan pre-season, there is some chinks in their armour.
The Tigers were right in their match last week and although the Panthers were clinical in the second half and do welcome back May in the centres, there is a small chance that the Cowboys lift in front of their home fans and make a game of this.
At this stage I am not confident in the Panthers to cover big lines away from home in places like Townsville.
Predicted score: 24 Panthers - Cowboys 12
