NRL Pro Punter Previews - Roosters v Panthers, Round 4 2024

Round 4 kicks off with Thursday night at the Sydney Football Stadium.

The Roosters bounced back to form last weekend by crushing Souths. The Roosters are a bit hard to pin down at present, as they were great against Broncos and Souths, but made to look ordinary by Manly. I am also a little unsure about just how much I want Keary to return to this team. Without Keary overcalling Sam Walker, the plucky number 7 had his best game and I am not sure Keary-Walker combo is best for Roosters. But Sandon Smith is injured now, so they don’t really have a choice.

Happy to see Connor Watson back on the bench, however loss of Lindsay Collins isn’t great for the tricolours!

But the really big news heading into this one is the loss of Cleary. The best player in the game is a huge out and the market reacted accordingly yesterday, with the odds shifting from Panthers -4.5 to Panthers +3.5 (now +5.5).

While Schneider is no slouch of a replacement and the Panthers looked good against the Broncos, I think the Panthers form line is still not as great as many claim. They were kept scoreless in Round 1 by a Storm team missing some of their best players. In Round 2, the Eels came close to beating them despite having a patchwork defensive line due to early loss of Bayley S. Then against the Broncos, they were again gifted a key injury to Walsh, which compounded the absence of Haas and Reynolds.

All in all, a Panthers team missing Cleary and Fisher-Harris should struggle for the win here and I am having a small bet on Roosters at the slightly generous 1.70 on offer.
