While some people love backing teams after their coach has been sacked, it is far too much of a random / speculative theory for me. This is not one of those occasions where it is obvious the playing group wanted the coach gone and can lift immediately. So I am not reading anything into the appointment of Ben Hornby as temporary coach and will focus on the data.

Souths showed some positive signs in attack last weekend, with Cody Walker managing to improve his attacking game. However, most of the Souths tries came because the Storm suffered an injury to Coates and had to play Wishart on the wing.

Souths still conceded over 50 points, taking their season average to 35.7 per game. In contrast the Panthers are conceding only 16 points per game. With Souths still missing attacking weapons such as Latrell, Johnston, Graham and Munro out wide, it is hard to see how Souths can make a game of this.

The only thing that makes me doubt the Panthers is the 5-day turnaround for the Panthers, coming off a tough match in Townsville.

The Panthers looked a little flat, with Cleary’s clunkiness affecting the whole team.

The Panthers missed nearly 50 tackles and made 13 errors. If the Cowboys could kick goals, then they could have won.

Before Cleary was ruled out, I thought the Panthers would come out firing and cover the line here, but now I am not too sure. Souths have made a few changes to their line that I like and think that there is far too much uncertainty around this one.

Predicted score: 30 Panthers - Souths 12
