Punters Corner: Lesser lights and high value

ANZAC Day might be over but there is still plenty of value across the remaining seven games of the AFL for Round 6 and it starts tonight with a great price around Dumont for 30+ against a Power side on the crest of a slump!

Trent Dumont 25+ / 30+ / 35+ Disposals

'Froggy' paid out last week with 31, and has definite 30+ upside here again, especially with Ahern and Scott coming out of the side. Dumont is capable of 35+ at his absolute best but everything has to fall his way including an injury to a North on-baller you’d think. Still, great odds for the 30+.

Nick Larkey 2+ / 3+ / 4+ Goals

Read his 2017 stat line and it looks woeful with zero goals and just 6 disposals from two games. But in 2018, at VFL level, it was a different story altogether. Larkey dominated! He is an elite contested mark who kicked 41 goals from 17 games in the VFL last year (ranked #1 across the comp). With Brown likely to attract plenty of attention there is a good chance that this kid will be underestimated enough to sneak a few goals. Value is too good to pass up.

Peter Wright 4+ 5+ Goals

With no Harris Andrews, 'Two Meter Peter' Wright will have the reach to mark as many as he wants against the Lions. It’s just a matter of set shot accuracy. His 3.3 last week against te Crows' Keath and Talia shows me that the opportunity is there and the price is excellent. Were Hawkins or Franklin in this spot, they’d be half the odds.

Jordan Dawson 25+ / 30+ Disposals

This kid has torn the NEAFL apart for two years and just never been able to translate it to the AFL... until now! He's been on one of the best four-game improves I’ve ever seen, culminating a big 31 disposal game last week. I think that is a tall order to repeat but he now has the belief to go with the talent. Worth a go at great odds.

Matthew Taberner 3+ / 4+ / 5+ / 6+ Goals

Pushing quite a few chips in on the big man from the west, who this year KNOWS how good he is. One of the best contested marks in the AFL, and coming off a 3.3 game against the Giants - which will have given him no end of confidence - along with 2.3 before that against the Eagles. The Dogs defence are under-strength as it is and with Mundy playing game #300, I can see a scenario where the Dockers just absolutely kill them in a big breakout game for Taberner.

Liam Shiels 25+ 30+ Disposals

If he plays then Shiels is always in play for 30 touches in a team without Tom Mitchell. No Burgoyne there either, presumably young Morrison would come out for him, or perhaps Howe or Cousins, but Shiels can find the footy no worries at all. Has 35+ upside on his best day.

Jack Petruccelle 2+ / 3+ / 4+ / 5+ Goals

Kicking 5.2 in his last start will have shown the Eagles how they can play if their talls aren’t firing. Against Geelong who do have decent key defenders, there is a strong case to go back to 'Jack Flash' at great prices to repeat his efforts.

Hedge

Cruelly denied sporting glory due to recurring shin splint complaints and an aversion to warm-up laps, Hedge now spends his days golfing, fishing the leaves out of the Club 20 pools and identifying value plays in PGA, AFL, AFLW and T20. All you really need to know about him is he's more than comfortable taking 3I off the tee on a Par 5, and more than capable of pulling driver off the deck second shot.
