St. Kilda's Saint-Like Miracle

St. Kilda's season is a long way from being saved but the Saints may have saved their coach Alan Richardson's job on Saturday with a superb comeback from 39 points down.

The Saints kept the Gold Coast Suns scoreless in the final quarter as the Suns' fourth-quarter woes hit a new low, as the Saints booted 5 goals including Jade Gresham's brilliant and late lead-taking goal which would be the matchwinner.

They trailed by 31 points at the final break, but a barnstorming final quarter helped snap a 7-game losing streak.

In their first victory since round one, the Saints dominated the final quarter. They had 39 more disposals, 13 more clearances, 14 more inside 50s and eight scoring shots to none. It was a miserable collapse for the Suns, whose season hit a new low.

Despite St. Kilda losing Jimmy Webster and Bailey Rice to injury during the game, the Suns could still not run out the game and remain the AFL's worst fourth-quarter side having won only one final quarter all season long.

Off the back of two embarrassing displays against Geelong and GWS, the Suns put together a brilliant first half and were 84 percent favourites going into the main break. By three-quarter time that had raised to 95 percent, further illustrating what a miraculous comeback it was by St. Kilda and disastrous collapse for Gold Coast.

Despite their chances rating at only 5 percent entering the final term, the Saints got goals from Josh Battle, Paddy McCartin, Tim Membrey and Daniel McKenzie to get the Saints right back in it before Gresham sealed a memorable win.

The Saints now have a bye week to enjoy and rest up, whilst Gold Coast head south to Tasmania for a clash with Hawthorn.
