The Sydney Swans broke the hearts of North Melbourne supporters yesterday, snatching a late win thanks to Allir Allir's good luck. The Swans defender found himself alone with the ball and was able to slot the goal to seal a Sydney victory.
In a dramatic tussle that saw the Stats Insider In-Play Win Probability lead change an astonishing eleven times during the game, the two sides traded blows throughout the game right until the end.
Allir's goal was the perfect finish to a frantic final term, as the 'Roos started with an eleven point lead, which swung completely in reverse as the Swans took a twelve point lead, before North kicked ahead again by seven, before the Swans finally snatched it for the last time.
The Roos have now dropped out of the top eight on percentage, while Sydney further underlined their credentials as a Finals side not to be messed with.
North started the game as the stronger team, and their twelve point lead at the first break had them at 67% likely winners on the In-Play Win Probability.
The Swans responded in the second term booting five goals to one, to take a 13 point lead into the main break. Their chances were rated at 70% likely winners at the half.
North Melbourne responded in the second half, a strong third quarter seeing them hold an 11 point lead at the final break. The win probability had swung yet again and the Roos were at 76% with a quarter to play.
However, it was Sydney who would win the battle as they wrested control late in the game to claim a valuable four premiership points in the race for Finals positions.
Buddy Franklin kicked three goals for the winners as he breezed past the 900 career goal mark, becoming just the 9th player in VFL/AFL history to achieve the feat. Wonderkid Ben Ronke booted five in another stunning effort.
North skipper Jack Ziebell booted five for the Roos, with Majak Daw and Ben Brown kicking four each.
Next week Sydney looks forward to a game against the Gold Coast Suns, while it doesn't get any easier for North Melbourne as they take on Collingwood.
