The Big Weekend Numbers

Data Road Trip looks back on the week, investigating the key data points and numbers that formed what we saw in the week that was in sports. This week we take a look at the weekend of AFL and NRL action, digging out some of the extraordinary numbers that made up what we saw. Let's get into it!

9 Kicks, 7 Goals, 10 Tackles

Ben Ronke had a game to remember on Friday night, as the Sydney Swans new dynamo bagged a Buddy Franklin-esque seven goals against Hawthorn at the MCG. It was made all the more miraculous by the fact he only had nine kicks for the night and an additional ten tackles. It was the perfect modern small forward performance.

38 Contested Possessions

Captain Patrick Cripps and veteran Matthew Kreuzer combined for 38 contested possessions (19 each) on Saturday afternoon to superbly lead Carlton to their first win of the AFL season. Both players led from the front and dominated as the two best players on the ground, and were aided by Ed Curnow's 24 disposals and 13 tackles, which Curnow leads the AFL in for the season with 74, 9 more than any other player in the league.

0 Points

The New Zealand Warriors were shutout for just the third time at Mount Smart in their history as the Sydney Roosters ran riot on them in a 32-0 thrashing. They were dominated from start to finish, badly missing injured stars Shaun Johnson and Isaac Luke. Did Sydney show themselves as the real deal, or perhaps are the Warriors regressing?

31 Disposals

Tom Rockliff had his best game yet as a Port Adelaide player, racking up 14 kicks, 17 handballs and 127 fantasy points in a superb breakout performance after some early season struggles with his new club. Rockliff saved his best game for the Power so far for the right time, leading Port Adelaide to a Showdown victory against fierce rival Adelaide. A sign of things to come from the ex-Lion?

155 Fantasy Points

Jack Macrae backed up 40 disposals, 8 tackles and 151 fantasy points against the Gold Coast Suns with an even better 47 disposals, 8 tackles and 155 fantasy points against the Brisbane Lions on Saturday night. The last two games have seen Macrae slot into fifth favourite for the Brownlow Medal, as a $21 outsider.
