The boys light up for big weekend of Golf @ Club 20

PGA Playoffs season is here and as the top 125 ranked players from this season tee it up at TPC Boston tonight for the Northern Trust, we are feeling pretty bloody good about our betting card (just ask us).

After a few weeks of treading water on the collects, hopes are up for trousers down with the hostess on the…  no wait, bloody Aussie Crawl just came on the radio, where was i? Oh yeh, hopes are high for a return to the winners circle this weekend.

The Northern Trust and Wales Open form has been studied and we’re feeling really dialled in, here’s our 24 bets for a ripping weekend of golf.

Northern Trust

As we do most weeks, we’re taking premium ball strikers and hoping they can roll a few in, this course will significantly favour really good iron players, particularly guys who can hit their long irons close but if the putts aren’t dropping it will be all for naught.

Not a lot of wind or weather to speak of. PM/AM slightly favourable?

Headlining the card is Collin Morikawa who is at remarkably good odds for someone on the cusp of World #1. He hits fairways off the tee and his irons are the best in the business. He is ranked #1 and #3 in this field in proximity from 175-200yr and 200yr+ respectively.

Yes he can lose 8 strokes putting, but he can also gain 8 as we saw at the PGA Champs and you’d think there would be some putting swagger carry over to this event on what is his preferred Bent Grass surface (albeit slightly). Taking the $5 for the top 5 as well just in case he 3 putts the 18th to lose it by a stroke!

Next on the card is Tiger Woods. I’m not surprised if you haven’t heard of him, as nobody is talking about him. The guy’s back is a little stiff and he misses a few putts and suddenly he is not the greatest golfer that’s ever lived? Please. Tigers irons have been really solid (gained over 13 strokes on the field on approach in last 4 events!) he just has not been able to buy a putt.

He will want a big week here to climb over a few before they get to Eastlake. Taking him in all four markets (Win, Top 5, Top 10, Top 20) and just crossing the fingers he can be at least neutral on the greens (the putter has been getting slowly better week to week).

Third on the betting card is Matthew Wolff who flew home Sunday at the PGA Champs to find a share of T4. The case for Wolff is simple, he gained over 7 strokes both off the tee AND on approach in San Francisco and three weeks back at the 3M he gained over 5 strokes putting.

Wolff is actually an incredibly good putter and there have been signs of life with the flatstick lately enough to stick with him here in the hope he can put all three facets together. If he does it will be daylight second. Like that he is off late with Scotty (very tempted to bet him, just missed out on making the card), think the PM/AM split looks the better one and should be a fun grouping which hopefully will help Wolff recapture some putting form. Currently 34th in the Fedex Cup rankings so a good tourney here can book his ticket to Eastlake. Like Tiger, we’re taking Wolff for the Win, Top 5, Top 10 and Top 20.

Two fliers to finish our Northern Trust card in Doc Redman and Scott Stallings. Redman is coming off a T3 at the Wyndham where he gained everywhere including on the greens. That makes three straight events where the putter has been switched on – if he can sustain that then we know his ball striking will give him looks on most holes. Bent his preferred surface. Redman is currently 64th in the FedEx rankings so there is pressure to make it to the BMW next week, pressure which should ensure proper course management which can sometimes be his downfall.

Stallings is a local guy getting a home game without the whole family cheering on him each hole which we think will really help a guy like that. Ranked #1 in this field for proximity 200yrds+ over the last 50 rounds so clearly he can hit a long iron very well. Adding to his edge in course knowledge is the motivation of being 117th in the FedEx standings currently. With the boost in playoff points, Stallings can play the BMW by making this cut and having a good weekend and again, the motivation is there without the pressure of crowds at a course he would know very well. Both these guys for the Win/Top 5/Top 10/Top 20.

Wales Open

We’re back at Celtic Manor again this week so we know what the course is going to throw at these players. Expected winds will make the winning score here around the -16 mark – avoiding big numbers will be better than birdies a lot of the holes this week.

Gavin Green starts our small betting card after his eye-catching bogey-free 63 on Sunday last week. He never looked likely to win it after a slow start, but his final round showed what he is capable of. That was his sixth straight round under par after missing his first cut two weeks back with a pair of 69’s. Third up on a course he just brained last Sunday, in a field that is lacking top echelon strength, the prices about Green look too good to pass up. Win, Top 5 and Top 10.

Next on the list is Club 20 favourite Jason Scrivener who was again in contention on the final day only to shoot a lacklustre -1 70. The young aussie is class and will only have more of an advantage relative to the field having played this last week. Third time lucky in contention – expect he is in the final few groupings and kicks on with this one. Win, Top 5, Top 10.

Hedge

Cruelly denied sporting glory due to recurring shin splint complaints and an aversion to warm-up laps, Hedge now spends his days golfing, fishing the leaves out of the Club 20 pools and identifying value plays in PGA, AFL, AFLW and T20. All you really need to know about him is he's more than comfortable taking 3I off the tee on a Par 5, and more than capable of pulling driver off the deck second shot.
