England pulled off a late win against Tunisia in their World Cup opener, as Captain Harry Kane bagged two goals to secure a 2-1 win in their opening Group G encounter.
Tunisia threatened to steal a point after Kyle Walker gave away a penalty in the first half, but England's pressure eventually paid off after Harry Maguire's header from a corner found Kane at the back post to head in and seal three valuable points.
England's talismanic forward Kane opened the scoring after 10 minutes after John Stones header was parried in his direction for a simple tap-in.
The Three Lions were the better outfit for much of the game, but almost were made to rue quite a few missed opportunities as Dele Alli, Raheem Sterling and Jesse Lingard, in particular, were unable to capitalise on chances created for them.
England were also controversially not awarded a couple of penalty chances when Kane was wrestled down in the box, as Tunisia dug deep in search of a draw. They gave a good account of themselves defensively, making life extremely difficult for the English but it would not matter with Kane's late winner.
The English will want to make sure their wastefulness does not cost them down the line, but they'll take plenty of performances from a game they were in control for most of.
Harry Kane has now scored in his past four games for England, his best run for the national team. He stood up for his country when they needed him and his two goals keeps him in touch with Cristiano Ronaldo, who leads the race for the golden boot with three strikes.
Underdogs Panama awaits England in their next encounter, whilst Tunisia's road doesn't get any easier as they play Belgium next. Tunisia's converted penalty was their only shot on target in the match, so they have plenty to improve on going forward.
