What is a Boxed Multi Bet?

Every Australian punter worth their salt is familiar with a multi. It's a rite of passage for an Aussie punter to place a multi on sports.

While the multi is a captivating way to bet, it is not the only way to wager your cash on sports with an online bookmaker such as PointsBet when looking to combine multiple outcomes for a higher pay out.

One of those methods is Boxed Multi betting.

As described by PointsBet: "A Round Robin, or Boxed multi, is a multi bet that combines one or more single bets and/or parlays such that not every selection needs to be correct to provide a return."

Boxed Multi betting is similar to a multi bet in that your selecting multiple outcomes to happen, the only difference is, not every leg needs to be a winner for you to get a collect.

For this example, we're using the MLB and home run betting to help breakdown what a Boxed Multi bet is, how to place one and why you should consider implementing it into you betting strategy.

Boxed Multi Betting: A Brief Overview

Boxed Multi betting is a unique type of wager that originates from traditional multis but expands the concept by breaking down the wager into multiple combinations of individual legs. While a standard multi requires a minimum of two legs, a Boxed Multi requires at least three.

Breaking down how a Boxed Multi bet works, we'll explain why they require at least three legs to work, and how it's possible to win, even when not all of your selections deliver the desired result.

How Does a Boxed Multi Work?

While a traditional multi requires of all legs to be winners to get a collect, a Boxed Multi breaks the original multi down into a series of smaller multis, ranging from combinations of two legs to the maximum possible minus one (e.g., four combinations for a five-leg multi). These combinations are often presented as a formula: number of legs × number of combinations.

For instance, in a five-leg multi, you could have options like 2s x 10, 3s x 10, and 4s x 5.

Consider a standard five-leg home run multi:

Standard Multi:

  • Player A
  • Player B
  • Player C
  • Player D
  • Player E

This leads to ten two-leg multis in the Boxed Multi 2s x 10 format:

Boxed Multi 2s x 10:

  • Players A + B
  • Players A + C
  • Players A + D
  • Players A + E
  • Players B + C
  • Players B + D
  • Players B + E
  • Players C + D
  • Players C + E
  • Players D + E

Imagine Player A hits a home run, but Player B doesn't. Rather than facing a losing multi with three legs remaining, you still retain the possibility of six potential winning combinations, only losing the four combinations that included Player B.

Considering Boxed Multi Bets

As with all sports betting, adding more legs to a multi increases risk. While straight bets are relatively safer, multis introduce variability. Boxed Multis carry more risk since you're not only betting on multis, but multiple multis simultaneously. Even modest bets can accumulate quickly, as demonstrated in the example.

Boxed Multis are particularly suited for home run betting. If you're already planning home run multis, a Boxed Multi allows you to reduce your risk while expanding the potential for wins with two or three successful legs. A well-structured 5-leg Boxed Multi can break even or generate a small profit with just two legs hitting.

By integrating Boxed Multis betting into punting strategy, you can amplify your betting experience while managing risk effectively.

As you explore this exciting approach, remember to bet responsibly, set limits, and prioritise informed decision-making. Enjoy the thrill of sports betting while maintaining control over your actions.
